Armor & Shields of Britannia
A comprehensive reference to physical defense, armor ratings, dexterity penalties, body coverage, and shield blocking in Ultima Online: Renaissance.

Armor Mechanics in the Renaissance Era

Armor in Ultima Online: Renaissance mitigates incoming physical melee and ranged damage. Total defensive capability is determined by your overall Armor Rating (AR), coverage location, and whether your gear allows Meditation.

Body Coverage Distribution

When a physical strike connects, the game engine rolls a location hit check according to the following canonical distribution:

  • Chest / Torso: 35% chance to be struck (provides the largest share of total AR).
  • Legs: 22% chance to be struck.
  • Arms: 14% chance to be struck.
  • Head / Helm: 14% chance to be struck.
  • Neck (Gorget): 7% chance to be struck.
  • Hands (Gloves): 7% chance to be struck.

Meditation & Dexterity Penalties

  • Mage Armor (Meditatable): Regular Leather and bone/cloth items do not hinder active or passive Meditation. Mages rely on leather suits to maintain mana regeneration.
  • Non-Meditatable Armor: Studded leather, ringmail, chainmail, and platemail disrupt active mana regeneration unless crafted from special materials.
  • Dexterity Loss: Heavier metallic armor subtracts directly from your Dexterity attribute, reducing stamina and swing speed.

Armor Sets & Ratings

Standard Armor Suits (Iron / Regular Leather Baseline)
Armor Set Base Total AR Dex Penalty Meditatable? Primary Skill Material Needed
Leather Suit 13 AR 0 Yes Tailoring 32 Leather
Studded Leather Suit 16 AR 0 No Tailoring 34 Leather
Bone Armor Suit 30 AR -6 No Tailoring 34 Bones + Leather
Ringmail Suit 18 AR -4 No Blacksmithing 46 Ingots
Chainmail Suit 23 AR -7 No Blacksmithing 46 Ingots

Note: Exceptional quality crafted by a Grandmaster smith or tailor adds a significant AR bonus (+20% baseline) plus defensive durability.

Shields & Parrying

Carrying a shield equips your character for Parrying, rolling an active block chance whenever attacked in melee combat. Successful blocks absorb physical damage before it touches body armor.
