The Arcane Arts of Britannia

Magic in UO: Renaissance is an intricate and demanding craft governed by eight circles of power, mystical Words of Power, and natural reagents. A skilled mage is capable of offensive bursts, battlefield manipulation, instantaneous global transport, and summoning beings from the outer planes.

To successfully cast a spell, an adventurer must meet three conditions:

1. The spell must be transcribed into your equipped or carried Spellbook (or cast directly from a single-use Scroll).
2. You must carry the required Reagents in your backpack (unless casting from a scroll, which supplies its own components).
3. You must possess sufficient Mana and an adequate Magery skill level for the spell's circle.

The Eight Reagents

Every spell in Britannia draws upon the raw alchemical essence of one or more of the eight traditional reagents. In the Renaissance era, reagents are strictly required for every spell cast from a spellbook (there is no Lower Reagent Cost attribute):

Spellcasting Rules & Formulas

Casting from Scrolls

When casting from a magical scroll:

• The game treats the spell as being 2 Circles lower for calculating your chance of success. For example, casting an 8th Circle Resurrection scroll requires the Magery skill normally needed for a 6th Circle spell.
• The normal Mana cost for the spell's true circle is consumed regardless of whether the cast succeeds or fails.
• The scroll is consumed upon casting.

Route A: Low-Cost In-Town Training (Without Resist)

This route allows training safely inside town guard zones and minimizes expensive reagent use:

• 0.0 – 30.0: Train with an NPC Mage in town (costs ~200–300 gold).
• 30.0 – 40.0: Cast 3rd Circle spells (e.g., Bless, Fireball).
• 40.0 – 55.0: Cast 4th Circle spells (e.g., Mana Drain, Greater Heal).
• 55.0 – 65.0: Cast 5th Circle spells (e.g., Magic Reflection, Mind Blast).
• 65.0 – 80.0: Cast 6th Circle spells (e.g., Invisibility, Dispel).
• 80.0 – 95.0: Cast 7th Circle spells (e.g., Mana Vampire, Mass Dispel).
• 95.0 – 100.0: Cast 7th Circle (Mass Dispel) or 8th Circle (Earthquake, Resurrection).

Route B: Combat Mage Training (Simultaneous Resisting Spells)

This classic path trains both Magery and Resisting Spells together outside town or in a private house:

• 0.0 – 30.0: Purchase training from an NPC Mage.
• 30.0 – 55.0: Cast Fire Field and walk back and forth along the 5-tile length of the flames. (Brings Resist to ~55.0 rapidly).
• 55.0 – 60.0: Cast Lightning on self (1 Sulfurous Ash, 1 Mandrake Root).
• 60.0 – 82.0: Cast Energy Bolt on self (1 Black Pearl, 1 Nightshade).
• 82.0 – 100.0: Cast Flamestrike on self (1 Spiders' Silk, 1 Sulfurous Ash).
