Magery Compendium & Training Guide

"Magic is hard, and successful Mages are as rare as dragon teeth. Throw a fireball here, a lightning bolt there, and add a summoned daemon for good measure. Those who study the magical arts of Britannia may not be adept with a sword and shield, but few can surpass the power of a learned mage."

Fundamentals & Casting Requirements

To successfully cast a spell in Britannia, a practitioner requires four fundamental components:

  1. Spell in Spellbook: The target spell must be transcribed into your equipped spellbook (or cast directly from a single-use scroll).
  2. Reagents: The specific physical reagents required by the spell must be in your backpack (or a single scroll containing the woven essence).
  3. Sufficient Mana: Your mana pool must meet or exceed the circle's mana requirement. Mana is consumed upon cast initiation regardless of success.
  4. Sufficient Magery Skill: Your skill rating determines your percentage chance of successfully channeling the arcane energies without fizzling.

Companion Skills: For maximum combat and survival potency, pair Magery with Evaluating Intelligence (dramatically increases offensive spell damage), Meditation (rapidly regenerates mana), and Resisting Spells (reduces incoming magic damage and duration of curses/paralysis).

Casting from Scrolls

When casting directly from a spell scroll, the game treats the spell as if it were two Circles lower for calculating your chance of success.

For example, casting the 8th Circle spell Resurrection from a scroll is calculated using the casting difficulty of a 6th Circle spell. The full normal mana cost of the spell (50 mana) is consumed regardless of success.

Scroll Casting Success Formula

The chance of successfully casting a scroll is calculated by taking the difference between your current Magery skill and the minimum casting threshold of the spell two circles lower:

$$\text{Success Chance } (\%) = (\text{Magery Skill} - \text{Minimum Scroll Skill}) \times 2.5\%$$

  • Example: An adventurer with 80.0 Magery casting an 8th Circle Resurrection scroll (2 circles below = 6th Circle min requirement of ~51.8 skill):

$$\text{Success Chance} = (80.0 - 51.8) \times 2.5\% \approx 70.5\%$$ If successful, 50 mana and the scroll are consumed.

Circle Requirements & Mana Costs

The table below outlines the minimum Magery skill required to cast spells of each Circle (~2% chance of success), the skill required for virtually guaranteed success (99%), and the required mana per cast.

Circle Min Skill Required (~2% Success) 99% Success Threshold Mana Cost Common Spells
1st Circle 0.0 30.0 4 Mana Clumsy, Create Food, Feeblemind, Heal, Magic Arrow, Night Sight, Reactive Armor, Weaken

* Note: Every skill point beyond the minimum skill provides approximately +2.0% to +3.0% chance of success until reaching the 99% cap.

Gaining Magery (Training to Grandmaster)

To train Magery efficiently, you should always macro spells that offer an optimal balance between skill gain potential, mana consumption, and reagent expense.

Method 1: Gaining Magery without Resisting Spells (Town / Budget Macro)

This path focuses on resource efficiency and allows you to macro safely inside guarded town limits or private homes without needing constant healing.

  • 0.0 – 30.0: Train from an NPC Mage at any town Sorcery or Mage shop (~200 to 300 gold).
  • 30.0 – 40.0: Cast 3rd Circle (Fireball on self or Bless).
  • 40.0 – 55.0: Cast 4th Circle (Greater Heal on self or Lightning).
  • 55.0 – 65.0: Cast 5th Circle (Incognito or Paralyze).
  • 65.0 – 80.0: Cast 6th Circle (Invisibility on self or Dispel).
  • 80.0 – 95.0: Cast 7th Circle (Mana Vampire or Flamestrike).
  • 95.0 – 100.0: Cast 7th / 8th Circle (Flamestrike or Earthquake in an isolated house).

Method 2: Gaining Magery with Resisting Spells (Dual-Skill Power Training)

This accelerated method trains both Magery and Resisting Spells simultaneously. It requires a secluded location (such as a private house) and a secondary character or macro applying bandages to sustain your hit points.

Skill Range Recommended Spell Reagents Required Strategic Notes
0.0 – 30.0 NPC Mage Training 200–300 Gold Purchase starting skill from NPC Mage in town.
30.0 – 55.0 Fire Field 1 Black Pearl, 1 Spiders' Silk, 1 Sulfurous Ash Cast a 5-tile Fire Field and run back and forth through the flames. Rapidly raises both Magery and Resisting Spells to ~55.0 in under 45 minutes.
55.0 – 60.0 Lightning 1 Sulfurous Ash, 1 Mandrake Root Cast directly onto your training partner or target.
60.0 – 82.0 Energy Bolt 1 Black Pearl, 1 Nightshade High-velocity gains while applying consistent resistance checks.
82.0 – 100.0 Flamestrike 1 Spiders' Silk, 1 Sulfurous Ash Heavy 7th circle spell that propels both skills to 100.0 Grandmaster.

Acquiring Reagents

A reliable supply of reagents is essential for any aspiring arch-mage:

  • NPC Vendors (Most Effective): Town Alchemists and Mage shops stock all 8 reagents in quantities of 20 to 999. Buying from NPC vendors is by far the fastest and most economical method to fuel training macros.
  • Monster Loot: Various magical creatures (Gargoyles, Daemons, Liches, Evil Mages) drop bundles of reagents. While rewarding during hunting, loot drops alone will not sustain continuous training macros.
  • Wilderness Foraging: Reagents spawn sparsely on the ground in remote forests and swamps. While atmospheric, gathering from the wilderness is inefficient for dedicated skill training.

Gideon's Veteran Advice

Tips for Efficient Grandmastery:
  • Starting Character Creation: Under most circumstances, allocate 50 points to Magery during character creation. Magery is one of the most reagent-intensive skills to train from 0 to 50.
  • Dual-Account Macroing: Set up a second character equipped with high Anatomy and Healing to continuously apply bandages to your training mage while casting offensive spells.
  • Timeline & Expectations: On UO:Renaissance, dedicated macroing can raise Magery from 50 to 100.0 Grandmaster in approximately 3 days, leaving your character with mid-90s Resisting Spells if using the dual-skill progression.
  • Reagent Stocking: Stock approximately 8,000 to 12,000 of each core reagent (Black Pearl, Nightshade, Sulfurous Ash, Spiders' Silk, Mandrake Root) for a complete run to 100.0.
