Sosarian Atlas: Choosing Your Path When creating a character in UO: Renaissance, you may select your initial starting city. Britannia offers eleven major settlements, ranging from the bustling capital of Britain to quiet farming hamlets and rugged frontier towns. While young players will begin their journey in the protected sanctuary of Ocllo, knowing the unique virtues, resources, and geography of each city will serve you well as you explore the realm.

Starting in Britannia

New characters can enter Sosaria through several major cities. Each town possesses its own cultural identity, architectural style, natural resources, and trade facilities:

Tip for New Players: Regardless of the city chosen during character creation, all newly created characters with Young Player Status will awaken in the peaceful training town of Ocllo to ensure a safe learning environment free from non-consensual PvP and theft.

Major Cities of the Realm

Ocllo: The Island Sanctuary

  • Location: Island east of Trinsic, south of Moonglow.
  • Guard Protection: Full Guard Zone across the island.
  • Moongate Access: Accessible via the New Player portal network and ships.
  • Overview: Ocllo is the dedicated training center and sanctuary for new citizens of Renaissance Britannia. Featuring quiet cobblestone avenues, an expansive town bank, tailor, smithy, and mage shops, Ocllo allows young adventurers to hone their skills in absolute safety. Just outside town sits the Ocllo dungeon and caverns, providing progressive hunting opportunities from small vermin to skeletons and orcs.

Britain: Capital of Britannia

  • Location: Central mainland Britannia.
  • Guard Protection: Extensively guarded throughout the urban core and castle perimeter.
  • Moongate Access: Northwest road crossing the northern bridge.
  • Overview: The largest and most vibrant metropolis in Sosaria. Lord British's castle dominates the northern skyline, surrounded by deep moats. Britain is universally recognized as the trade and community heart of the shard:
    • West Britain Bank (WBB): The historic gathering spot where merchants buy and sell goods, bards perform, and guilds assemble expeditions.
    • Artisan Quarters: Featuring The Hammer and Anvil smithy, master carpenter shops, and bustling clothiers.
    • The Music Hall: Renowned bardic academy where aspiring musicians and peacemakers study their craft.
    • Britain Sewers: A subterranean labyrinth beneath the city streets, harboring giant rats, spiders, and low-level beasts for apprentice warriors.

Moonglow: The City of Wisdom

  • Location: Verity Isle in eastern Britannia.
  • Guard Protection: High guard presence within city perimeter.
  • Moongate Access: Located just south of the town perimeter along the main path.
  • Overview: Moonglow is the realm's foremost center for esoteric studies, astrological science, and high magery.
    • The Lycaeum: Britannia’s premier repository of ancient books, scrolls, and arcane treatises, perched on the northern cliffs of Verity Isle.
    • The Moonglow Observatory: Housing the massive brass telescope used by scholars to study the twin moons, Trammel and Felucca.
    • Reagent Markets: Ample vendor shops offering black pearl, bloodmoss, mandrake root, nightshade, and other vital spellcasting components.

Trinsic: The Walled City of Honor

  • Location: South-central coast of the mainland.
  • Guard Protection: Heavily guarded with fortified stone battlements and defensible portcullises.
  • Moongate Access: Northwest of the northern gatehouse.
  • Overview: Crafted from golden sandstone, Trinsic is the fortress-city of the Paladins of Honor.
    • Paladin Order: Bastion of virtue, martial discipline, and heavy armory.
    • Security: The high stone curtain walls offer natural bottlenecks, historically celebrated during famous town invasions and faction warfare.
    • Harbor Facilities: Deepwater ocean docks accommodating sea expeditions, fishing galleys, and oceanic trade.

Minoc: The Northern City of Forges

  • Location: Northern Britannia, along the eastern mountain river deltas.
  • Guard Protection: Standard town guard coverage.
  • Moongate Access: East of town across the bridges toward Vesper.
  • Overview: Minoc is the industrial engine of Sosaria. Nestled against the jagged mineral-rich cliffs of Mount Kendall, Minoc is the primary home for prospectors, blacksmiths, tinkers, and woodworkers.
    • The Great Forges: Multi-furnace smelting facilities where miners process raw ores from dull copper to valorite.
    • Lumber Mills: Water-driven saws and woodcrafting guilds providing planks and timbers for home construction.
    • Artisan Guilds: Master tinkers offering tools, lockpicks, clockworks, and trap mechanisms.

Yew: The Forest of Justice

  • Location: Expansive northwestern forests of Britannia.
  • Guard Protection: Concentrated around the Court of Truth, Prison, and central services.
  • Moongate Access: Northeast deep woodland clearing.
  • Overview: Unlike the densely clustered stone towns, Yew is a sweeping pastoral settlement interwoven with the ancient Great Forest.
    • The Court of Truth: Britannia’s judicial seat and historic high court.
    • The Empath Abbey: Sanctuary of peaceful monks celebrated for producing Sosaria's finest vintage wines.
    • Ranger Bastion: Renowned bowcrafters and archers congregate here; the surrounding forests yield abundant timber for fletchers.

Skara Brae: The Isle of Spirituality

  • Location: Island off the western mainland coast.
  • Guard Protection: City core guarded; mainland ferry terminal partially patrolled.
  • Moongate Access: On the mainland coast directly north of the Skara Brae ferry dock.
  • Overview: Dedicated to the virtue of Spirituality, Skara Brae is an idyllic pastoral island surrounded by peaceful waters.
    • Ferry Transit: Free public passenger rafts transport travelers between the western mainland road and the island docks.
    • Healers and Clerics: Abundant herbalist gardens, spiritual healers, and serene chapels.
    • Open Farmlands: Plentiful cotton and wheat fields ripe for harvesting by apprentice crafters.

Jhelom: The City of Valor

  • Location: The Valorian Isles in the southern sea.
  • Guard Protection: Full municipal guard coverage within the inner cities and walls.
  • Moongate Access: Situated on the northern island of the Jhelom archipelago.
  • Overview: A rugged settlement spanning several tropical islands, Jhelom is a society built around martial pride, fencing, and tournament combat.
    • The Dueling Pits: Historic sand arenas where gladiators, brawlers, and champions test their steel.
    • Warrior Academies: Weapon masters offering training in fencing, swordsmanship, mace fighting, and parrying.
    • Valorian Stables: Renowned horse breeders and ostard stables catering to knights and heavy cavalry.

Vesper: The City of Bridges

  • Location: Eastern continental coastline, north of the Swamps of Despair.
  • Guard Protection: Standard town guard presence across the islands and thoroughfares.
  • Moongate Access: Southwest crossroads along the overland trade route.
  • Overview: Vesper is celebrated as the "Venice of Sosaria." Built across numerous islands linked by arched bridges and stone plazas over gentle canals.
    • Waterfront Trade: Expansive boatyards and fishing piers for ocean adventurers.
    • Dual Banks: Convenient banking facilities catering to travelers on both sides of the canal network.
    • Central Trade Guilds: Fine tailors, leatherworkers, and jewelers lining the water promenades.

Minor Settlements & Special Outposts

  • Cove: A picturesque haven secluded behind the mountain ridges near Minoc. Known for its peaceful cove waters, modest local services, and proximity to the perilous dungeon Covetous.
  • Nujel'm: An island paradise of sultan-style marble palaces, palm trees, and opulent bathhouses. The city features a massive public chessboard and lavish luxury merchants.
  • Buccaneer's Den: An infamous pirate hideout located on an uncharted tropical island. Warning: Buc's Den has no town guards. Criminals, thieves, and pirates roam freely through its taverns, underground passageways, and combat pits.
