Veterinary

Skill Overview & Mechanics

Veterinary allows tamers and adventurers to use clean bandages to restore hit points, cure debilitating poisons, and resurrect fallen bonded pets in the field. It functions as the animal counterpart to the Healing skill.

Important: Animal Lore Synergy Required!
Veterinary does not operate alone for advanced functions. Both Veterinary AND Animal Lore are mandatory to unlock curing and resurrecting:
  • 60.0 Veterinary & 60.0 Animal Lore: Unlocks the ability to cure poison on pets.
  • 80.0 Veterinary & 80.0 Animal Lore: Unlocks the ability to resurrect dead bonded pets.
* If a character has 100.0 Veterinary but only 59.9 Animal Lore, bandages will only restore hit points; all cure and resurrection checks will fail.
Gideon's Advice: Have 2 pet horses (low damage output) fight each other and heal them both repeatedly. You should use Animal Lore on them at the same time. GMing both skills is quite fast.

Dexterity & Bandage Speeds

Dexterity affects Veterinary in two ways:

  • Effective Skill Value: It contributes a small amount to the effective Veterinary skill value used by bandage checks. The skill’s stat weighting gives Dexterity a 4% component; the benefit diminishes as base Veterinary approaches 100.
  • Bandaging Speed: It speeds up bandaging a pet. At 100+ Dex, the non-AoS healing time is 3 seconds; at 80–99 it is 3.5 seconds, 50–79 is 4 seconds, 25–49 is 4.5 seconds, and below 25 is 5 seconds. Resurrecting a dead pet adds 5 seconds.
Pet Bandage Application Times:
Dexterity Range Heal / Cure Speed Resurrection Speed
100+ Dex 3.0 seconds 8.0 seconds
80 – 99 Dex 3.5 seconds 8.5 seconds
50 – 79 Dex 4.0 seconds 9.0 seconds
25 – 49 Dex 4.5 seconds 9.5 seconds
Under 25 Dex 5.0 seconds 10.0 seconds
* Resurrecting a dead pet adds 5 seconds to the base bandage application time.

Core Bandaging Rules & Environment

  • Range Limit (2 Tiles): You must remain within 2 tiles of your pet for the entire duration of the application. Moving 3 or more tiles away cancels the attempt with "You are too far away."
  • Damage Slips & Interrupts: Taking damage while bandaging causes fingers to slip. Taking hits does not completely abort the bandage, but each slip reduces the final hit points restored and reduces the success probability of curing poison or resurrecting.
  • Cure Priority: When applying bandages to a poisoned pet, the check automatically prioritizes curing the poison first. No hit points are restored on a bandage attempt that cures or fails to cure poison.
  • Bonded Pet Resurrection: Field resurrection with bandages only works on Bonded Pets. Unbonded pets that perish cannot be resurrected with bandages. Ghost pets can also be resurrected at town Healer NPCs for a gold fee.

Healing Output & Success Formulas

Both Veterinary and Animal Lore scale your effectiveness:

  • HP Restored: The minimum and maximum heal values scale with both skills. At Grandmaster (100.0 Vet / 100.0 Lore), each successful bandage restores approximately 32 to 54+ hit points to your pet.
  • Poison Curing Difficulty:
    • Lesser & Regular Poison: Readily cured once 60.0 Vet & Lore are met.
    • Greater Poison: Requires ~70–80+ Vet & Lore for dependable cure rates.
    • Deadly Poison: Challenging; requires 90+ Vet & Lore for reliable field cures.
    • Lethal Poison: High difficulty; Grandmaster (100.0) Vet & Lore recommended.
  • Resurrection Chance: At the minimum unlock threshold (80.0 Vet / 80.0 Lore), resurrection success is roughly 20% per bandage attempt. As both skills approach 100.0, the success rate rises substantially toward ~70% per attempt.

Training Guide (0 – 100 GM)

  • 0.0 – 30.0: Visit an NPC Veterinarian or Stablemaster in any major town (e.g. Britain, Moonglow, or Jhelom) and pay ~300 gold to train directly to approximately 30.0 skill.
  • 30.0 – 60.0 (Sparring Horses): Acquire two low-damage pets (e.g. horses, hinds, or sheep). Keep them in a stable or your private house, command them to attack each other, and continuously apply bandages to whichever takes damage. Tip: Actively train Animal Lore on them between bandages to keep the two skills synchronized.
  • 60.0 – 80.0 (Higher HP Pets): Transition to sparring creatures with larger health pools (such as bears, bulls, or summoned elementals). Bandaging pets that are poisoned will also trigger skill gain checks.
  • 80.0 – 100.0 (Ghost Pet Resurrection): The fastest and most efficient way to Grandmaster Veterinary is Ghost Pet Resurrection training. Have a dead, bonded pet (e.g. a bonded horse) ghost in your house. Repeatedly apply bandages to the ghost pet. Each attempt (regardless of whether resurrection succeeds or fails) awards a high-difficulty skill check. Make sure to cancel the prompt or keep the pet as a ghost to continue training.

Recommended Razor / UOSteam Macro Setup

Exec: Absolute Target (Pet Serial)

// Optional: Train Animal Lore target check between bandages to GM both simultaneously

Note: In Razor's Hotkeys > Targets menu, you can also bind "Bandage Target" and enable "Queue / Auto-Queue Object Delay" for seamless field healing during combat and boss encounters.
