Skill Gain Mechanics & Arrows

In classic Ultima Online, skills increase by direct practice. Skill gains are governed by the difficulty of the task relative to your current skill level:

  • Too Easy: Performing tasks far below your skill level yields zero gain.
  • Optimal Range: Performing actions with a 25% to 75% success chance yields the highest probability of gain.
  • Too Hard: Attempting tasks where you have 0% success chance will rarely or never gain.

The Skill Gump & Arrow Toggles

Open your skill window via your character paperdoll. Beside every skill is a toggle arrow:

  • ▲ (Up): Skill will actively gain when practiced (provided you have not hit the 700.0 cap).
  • ▼ (Down): When you hit the 700.0 skill cap, practicing another skill set to Up will systematically lower this skill to make room!
  • 🔒 (Locked): Prevents this skill from gaining or decaying, preserving your exact desired number.

The Power Hour / Burst Gain

On UO:Renaissance, players benefit from an enhanced initial skill gain window, commonly referred to as the burst gain period:

  • During active monster combat or resource gathering, characters experience accelerated gain chances on lower-tier skills.
  • Using training facilities such as the Ocllo Training Dummies and Newbie Dungeons provides safe, rapid advancement from 0 to 30.0+ skill before venturing into deep wilderness dungeons.

Skill Decay & Fine-Tuning Templates

Once your character reaches 700.0 total skill points, you have reached the grandmaster cap. You do not need to delete characters to change playstyles:

  1. Open your skill list.
  2. Find the skill you wish to discard and set its arrow to ▼ (Down).
  3. Set the new skill you wish to learn to ▲ (Up).
  4. Lock all other skills (🔒).
  5. As you practice your new skill, the discarded skill will smoothly decrease by 0.1 each time the new skill increases by 0.1.
