The Renaissance Skill System Character progression in Ultima Online: Renaissance is completely classless and skill-based. Rather than leveling up through fixed character classes, your avatar improves organically by practicing individual skills. With 55 distinct skills available, you have absolute freedom to forge any archetype — from a valiant dungeon warrior or mystic battle-mage to an artisan blacksmith or dungeon treasure hunter.

Core Mechanics & Caps

The 700.0 Skill Cap

  • Characters possess a total skill cap of 700.0 points.
  • Each individual skill caps at 100.0 (Grandmaster / GM level).
  • A fully trained character is commonly known as a 7x GM (e.g., 7 Grandmaster skills at 100.0 each), though skill points may be divided across any combination of fractional values (such as 120/100/80 combinations in advanced builds).

Skill Gain & Arrow Locks

Inside your client's Skill Window, every skill features a status toggle arrow:

  • Up Arrow (↑): The skill is active and will gain points when practiced.
  • Down Arrow (↓): The skill will drop points to make room for other gaining skills once your 700.0 total cap is reached.
  • Lock Icon (🔒): The skill is locked and will neither gain nor lose points.

Tip for Skill Gains: Always lock all skills you do not intend to raise. When training a new skill on a 700-cap character, set the unwanted skill to Down and your new skill to Up.

Stat Gains Through Skill Practice

Practicing skills provides a natural chance to raise your three core attributes: Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. Each skill has primary and secondary stat affinities:

  • Combat & Heavy Crafting (Swords, Mining, Blacksmithy) → Primary Strength gains.
  • Agility & Finesse (Fencing, Hiding, Stealing, Bowcraft) → Primary Dexterity gains.
  • Mental & Esoteric (Magery, Meditation, Evaluating Intelligence, Inscription) → Primary Intelligence gains.
  • The overall stat cap is 225 total points, with an individual stat maximum of 100 before buffs.

NPC Skill Training

You do not need to start from 0.0 with every skill. Town merchants and guildmasters can train your skills up to approximately 30.0 points instantly for a nominal gold fee: 1. Walk up to an appropriate town NPC (e.g. Blacksmith, Mage, Healer, Fighter). 2. Say: `[NPC Name] train [skill name]` (e.g. "John train fencing"). 3. The NPC will state the cost in gold. Drop the gold coins directly onto the NPC to receive immediate skill points.
