Master the art of unseen extraction: snooping backpacks, joining the Thieves Guild, disarming traps, disguises, and quick escapes.

Thievery

Jump to Section:

The Rogue's Toolkit

A master thief combines acute awareness, nimble hands, and supernatural stealth:

  • Snooping: Allows peeking into another character's backpack. Double-click the target while standing adjacent (within 1 tile). Snooping itself is not a criminal action, but alert players will notice your inspection!
  • Stealing: The defining skill. Used to snatch targeted items from a victim's pack or from the open ground.
  • Hiding & Stealth: Slip into the shadows and move silently while remaining completely invisible. At 100 Stealth, a thief can take up to 10 hidden steps without breaking concealment.
  • Detect Hidden & Remove Trap: Essential for finding hidden items and disarming treasure chest explosives.

Joining the Thieves Guild

To steal items directly from other player characters, a rogue **must** be an official member of the **Thieves Guild**:

  • Prerequisites:
    • Character age must be at least 48 real-time hours old.
    • Must have at least **60.0 Stealing** skill.
    • Must have **0 murder counts** (cannot be red).
  • Application: Locate an NPC Thief Guildmaster (found in shady taverns in Buccaneer's Den, Britain, or Jhelom). Say `[guildmaster name] join` and pay the 500 gold enrollment fee.
  • Leaving: Saying `[guildmaster name] quit` begins a 7-day resignation period.

Stealing Mechanics & Weight Limits

  • Maximum Stealable Weight: A thief can steal items weighing up to `Stealing / 10` stones (at 100 GM Stealing, max item weight is **10 stones**).
  • Success Formula: Chance of success is determined by your Stealing skill compared to the weight of the stolen item.
  • Being Caught:
    • If you fail or are noticed by an onlooker or victim, a message alerts the screen: You notice [Thief] trying to steal from [Victim]!.
    • You will flag **Criminal (Grey)** for 2 minutes. Anyone may attack you freely without penalty, and guards can be called if inside town borders!
    • Even on a successful steal, you are flagged **perma-grey** to the specific victim for 2 minutes.

Disguise Kits

Members of the Thieves Guild can purchase a **Disguise Kit** from the Guildmaster:

  • Using the kit alters your character's name, hair, and facial hair to a randomized civilian disguise for 2 hours.
  • If a guard spots you committing a crime, your disguise will be blown and your true identity exposed!
